The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love

I have never been so angry upon finishing a book. Sure, some books I might find boring, trite, maybe tasteless, but never have I actually been upset about a book. When I finished this (after throwing it across the room and brushing the taste of vomit out of my mouth), I made sure to hide it so that no one would ever see it in my house and realize I had read it.
Maybe I don't understand what is required for a book to win a Pulitzer. Maybe it's not what I assume: that a book should be emotionally powerful, the characters compelling (though not necessarily likeable), the prose creative and evocative.

Frisco Pigeon Mambo

My wife and I have widely different reading tastes, but we both enjoyed this book. The style has some similarities to Orwell's Animal Farm, but is lighter in nature. The plot is clearly outlined elsewhere on this page, so I won't bore you by repeating it.

Frisco Pigeon Mambo pokes fun at a wide variety of human institutions (eg. research laboratories, the media, city hall) and proclivities, but it also has some very funny one-liners.

So much fiction published is genre fiction, clearly fitting into a box of being romance, fantasy, thriller, etc.

Memory Mambo: A Novel

Achy Obejas, in her "Memory Mambo," writes creatively and cleverly of -- among other things -- as the title suggests, the very complex dance that our minds do when confronted with unforgettable (if altered) images that are subjectively recorded, subconsciously stored, and blurred by the rose-tinted lens of a hawk-like ego-defense!

She does so via her creation of an alienated Juani Casas, a tormented romantic who recognizes that "lies destroy everything, but especially love," -- who "knows things in her heart," suffers in (and out of) love, and tends to obsess -- who wanders around wondering: "what REALLY happened?!?!?" .
